ASF-1096: Cutaneous lupus erythematosus

ASF-1096 is a topically administered anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating substance for the treatment of cutaneous lupus erythematosus, especially the discoid lupus form (DLE) and the subacute form (SCLE).

Based on a unique mechanism of action and a favourable safety profile, ASF-1096 is a promising alternative to existing treatments and may be the first truly effective treatment for discoid lupus.

ASF-1096 has been grated “Orphan Drug” status from EMA.

Discoid Lupus erythematosus

Discoid lupus erythematosus is a chronic disorder of the skin, mainly females and most frequently involving the face, and it is characterised by well-defined red scaly patches of variable size, which heal with atrophy, scarring, alopecia and pigmentary changes.

The histology is characteristic. There are haematological and serological changes in approximately half of the patients, and these changes, with other evidence, suggest an autoimmune aetiology.

Sub-acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus

Sub-acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus has been described as a subset intermediate between discoid lupus erythematosus and systemic lupus erythematosus.

It manifests itself with papulo-squamous or annular lesions with inflammatory changes showing erythema and scales in various forms covering smaller or larger areas of the body. They heal without scarring. SCLE has also specific serological changes.
